MIRPUR, Bangladesh: Bangladesh defeated Pakistan by eight wickets in a one-sided first One-Day International (ODI) of the three-match series at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Wednesday, comfortably chasing a modest target after a dominant bowling display.

The hosts reached the 115-run target in just 15.1 overs, losing only two wickets, after bowling Pakistan out for 114 in 30.4 overs — the visitors’ lowest-ever ODI total against Bangladesh.

Opener Tanzid Hasan led the chase with an unbeaten 67 off 42 deliveries, guiding the home side to a convincing victory and a 1-0 lead in the series.

Pakistan collapse after promising start

Pakistan opted to bat first and initially made a steady start as openers Maaz Sadaqat and Sahibzada Farhan built a 41-run partnership.

Farhan scored 27 off 38 balls with four boundaries before pacer Nahid Rana struck in the final over of the first powerplay to provide Bangladesh with the breakthrough.

Rana continued to trouble Pakistan’s batting lineup. He dismissed debutant Shamyl Hussain for four in the 12th over, reducing Pakistan to 47-2.

The wickets began to fall rapidly thereafter. Maaz Sadaqat was dismissed by Rana for 18 off 28 balls, followed by Mohammad Rizwan who managed 10 off 20 deliveries.

Rana dismantled Pakistan’s middle order, completing his five-wicket haul when he dismissed Salman Ali Agha for five.

Pakistan’s innings continued to unravel. Mehidy Hasan Miraz removed Abdul Samad for a duck and then dismissed Hussain Talat for four.

Pakistan captain Shaheen Shah Afridi briefly attempted to stabilise the innings, hitting a boundary, but was trapped leg-before by Mehidy for four.

Taskin Ahmed later removed Wasim Jr for a duck as Pakistan slumped further.

Faheem Ashraf provided the only notable resistance in the lower order.

He scored 37 off 47 balls, hitting six fours and a six, and helped Pakistan cross the 100-run mark.

However, Mustafizur Rahman eventually dismissed Faheem to end Pakistan’s innings at 114.

Rana shines with five-wicket haul

Bangladesh’s bowlers dominated the match, led by Nahid Rana who claimed 5 for 24 in seven overs.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz supported him with three wickets, while Mustafizur Rahman and Taskin Ahmed picked up one wicket each.

Pakistan’s total of 114 marked their lowest ODI score against Bangladesh, surpassing their previous lowest total of 161 while batting second during the 1999 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in Northampton.

Tanzid leads Bangladesh chase

Bangladesh’s chase began confidently with openers Saif Hassan and Tanzid Hasan attacking Pakistan’s new-ball bowlers.

Tanzid targeted Shaheen Afridi and Faheem Ashraf early, helping Bangladesh race ahead in the powerplay.

The opening stand of 27 runs ended when Shaheen dismissed Saif Hassan for four off 10 balls.

Tanzid then combined with captain Najmul Hossain Shanto to build a dominant partnership. The pair added 82 runs, taking Bangladesh past the 50-run mark inside seven overs.

Tanzid brought up his fifth ODI half-century as Bangladesh reached 92-1 in 12 overs.

Wasim Jr eventually broke the partnership by dismissing Shanto for 27 off 33 balls, which included five boundaries.

However, the wicket came too late to alter the outcome.

Tanzid remained unbeaten on 67, striking seven fours and five sixes, while Litton Das scored three runs as Bangladesh completed the chase comfortably.
