DHAKA, Bangladesh: Bangladesh’s colleges, universities, and secondary schools resumed on Sunday following a month-long suspension brought on by political upheaval and student-led protests.

he closure, which began on July 17, followed violent clashes demanding reforms to the country’s job quota system. The protests ultimately led to the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The Ministry of Education issued a directive to reopen all institutions, and as of August 18, students were seen returning to their schools across the country. The reopening came after Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus instructed officials to resume academic activities, according to Somoy Television. Traffic congestion was reported in various parts of Dhaka as a result.

Although schools were initially set to reopen earlier in August, the resumption was delayed. The postponed Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) exams, which were affected by the unrest, are now scheduled to begin on September 11 and will conclude on October 23. Public universities have been closed since July 1 due to teachers striking over pension issues. Despite the reopening, low student attendance initially hindered full academic resumption.
