DHAKA: As many as 300 political activists were injured in a clash between the police and the opposition party activists in Bangladesh, Western media reported on Sunday. The clash took place when the Police used batons and tear gas against the opposition party activists to disperse them.

A local leading newspaper also reported that police personnel had opened fire on supporters and activists of the Khaleda Zia’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party. Some reports said that several police personnel were also injured in the clashes between the protestors and the police in Habiganj town.
Local leader Zia’ Bangladesh Nationalist Party G.K. Gaus said that the clashes occurred when thousands of activists began marching through the roads and streets. However, the Police confronted the party’s supporters and tried to stop them.
Palash Ranjan Dey, a police officer in Habiganj area told AFP that police were compelled to take action following opposition supporters abruptly attacked them while trying to break a security blockade.
Khaleda Zia’s party has been demanding the resignation of the incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the handover of power to a non-party caretaker set up until the next general polls in the country.

Zia’ Bangladesh Nationalist Party accuses Sheikh Hasina of vote rigging in 2018 and the party has been protesting over who should supervise the next elections in the South Asian country.
The US, the EU and the UN have been asking all parties in Bangladesh to avoid violence and work toward holding a credible general election in the country.
