DHAKA: Bangladesh pacer Tanzim Hasan Sakib has offered an apology for his misogynistic comments that criticized working women. However, he denied being a misogynist, asserting that “his mother is a woman.”
The Bangladesh cricket board confirmed Tanzim’s apology on Tuesday, for his comments which unfolded days after the pacer’s impressive international debut in the Asia Cup. During the last super four match of the subcontinent tournament, he dismissed Indian captain Rohit Sharma with only his fourth international delivery.
Jalal Yunus, the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s cricket operations chief, confirmed Tanzim’s apology and stated that the player had received a warning about refraining from making similar posts in the future. Tanzim, however, maintained that he did not hold misogynistic views.
Jalal said that the cricketer says he holds no animosity towards women, emphasizing that his mother is a woman.
Tanzim’s controversial posts, dating back to the previous year, criticized women entering the workforce and associating with male friends at university.
Tanzim Hasan Sakib Criticizing Working Women in Facebook Post
In one Facebook post, he wrote, “If the wife works, her elegance is damaged. If the wife works, the family is ruined. If the wife works, the veil is ruined. If the wife works, society is ruined.”
It’s worth noting that the majority of the workforce in Bangladesh’s garment factories, which have played a significant role in the country’s economic growth, comprises women. Nevertheless, conservative patriarchal attitudes persist in this predominantly Muslim nation.
The cricketer’s comments prompted a strong reaction, with Paris-based feminist writer Jannatun Nayeem Prity pointing out that the Bangladesh team jerseys are mostly produced in factories staffed by women. She expressed her sympathy, stating that it’s regrettable that you do not regard your mother as an ordinary human being.
