DHAKA, Bangladesh: Flooding in Bangladesh has resulted in at least 13 deaths and impacted 4.5 million people, according to the disaster management and relief ministry.
The heavy rains have triggered severe floods across the country, which is highly susceptible to such natural disasters due to its extensive network of rivers. The disaster has prompted a significant humanitarian response, with nearly 190,000 people relocated to emergency shelters.
The flooding has affected 11 of Bangladesh’s 64 districts, with Feni, located about 100 kilometers northwest of Chittagong, experiencing the most severe damage.
Rescue efforts are underway, but conditions remain dire. “It’s a catastrophic situation here,” said rescue volunteer Zahed Hossain Bhuiya, highlighting the urgent need for assistance.
Bangladesh, one of the nations most vulnerable to climate change and natural disasters, faces recurring flood events, which exacerbate its struggles with poverty and infrastructure challenges. The floods serve as a stark reminder of the country’s vulnerability and the need for effective disaster management and climate adaptation strategies.
