Bangladesh Eagerly Awaits Dr Muhammad Yunus Meeting with Pakistan PM: Experts

ISLAMABAD: Analysts and experts from Bangladesh said that the scheduled meeting between Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shabaz Sharif and Dr Muhammad Yunus on the sidelines of UN General Assembly is being keenly awaited in Bangladesh as a very welcoming development.  These remarks were shared by prominent IR experts from Bangladesh at a roundtable talk held by the Institute of Regional Studies (IRS) on the “Post Hasina Wajid Bangladesh”.

Pakistan-Bangladesh Ties

Professor Shahab Enam Khan from Jhangirnagar University, Dhaka and Professor Saber Chaudhry, Dean at Dhaka University also highlighted the goodwill and desire for enhancing multifaceted cooperation shared by the people of Bangladesh and Pakistan. The experts hoped that Bangladesh will achieve more progress and development under the leadership of Dr. Yunus. They added that Bangladesh had the huge potential to achieve economic growth, political stability, and balanced foreign ties. However, they admitted that the reform process might face several challenges due to highly politicized institutions in the South Asian country.

On the occasion, Ambassador Jauhar Saleem, President of IRS, also emphasized the significance of building on the significant economic cooperation between Dhaka and Islamabad to further substantiate the bilateral relations.   Professor Shahab Enam has highlighted the need to identify potential sectors of greater cooperation such as exchange of scholars, tourism, and business interactions, so to further cooperation between the two nations.

India’s Propaganda, Disinformation Campaign

Ambassador Syed Ahmed Maroof, Pakistan’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh has stressed that the interim government of Dr Muhammad Yunus had the support of all major political parties for comprehensive economic as well as constitutional reforms. He rejected the notion of continued ethnic or communal violence in Bangladesh and attributed the spread of disinformation and misinformation to Indian propaganda.
