ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s star batter and current Peshawar Zalmi captain, Babar Azam, has enjoyed numerous memorable moments in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) over the years.

However, when asked to name his most treasured memory from the tournament, he gave a heartfelt response that featured none other than South African great AB de Villiers.

Reflecting on his PSL journey during a press conference ahead of the 10th edition of the league, Babar shared that meeting the South African icon — a cricketer he has long admired — stands out as his most special moment in the tournament.

“Meeting my idol, AB de Villiers, was my favourite PSL memory. I learned a great deal from him,” Babar revealed.

AB de Villiers in PSL

AB de Villiers, renowned for his innovation and impact at the crease, took part in the 2019 PSL as part of the Lahore Qalandars squad. For Babar, who has often spoken of how AB’s playing style inspired his own approach, the chance to meet and interact with his hero was a dream come true.

The admiration between the two is not one-sided — AB de Villiers has also spoken highly of Babar in interviews over the years, praising his composure and technique.

While his encounter with AB de Villiers remains closest to his heart, Babar also highlighted another significant moment in his PSL career — winning the 2020 title with Karachi Kings.

Lifting trophy

“Lifting the trophy with Karachi Kings was another major highlight,” he added.

That triumph was Karachi Kings’ first-ever PSL title, with Babar playing a match-winning innings of 63 not out in the final against Lahore Qalandars, earning him the Player of the Match award.

Now at the helm of Peshawar Zalmi, Babar continues to cement his legacy — not just as a prolific top-order batter but also as a respected leader. Yet, it’s moments like meeting a childhood idol that offer a glimpse into the humble beginnings of a player who once dreamed of greatness while watching his heroes dominate the world stage.
