ISLAMABAD: Former Pakistan captain Babar Azam has responded to ongoing criticism regarding his strike rate in T20 internationals, asserting that he plays in line with the team’s requirements rather than public opinion.

While talking to the media, the Peshawar Zalmi skipper addressed the recurring debate about his approach during the powerplay, a topic that has frequently divided fans and pundits alike.

Both Babar and wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan were excluded from Pakistan’s squad for the recent T20I series in New Zealand, reportedly as part of a broader shift towards a more aggressive style of play.

“I play my natural game,” Babar explained. “I’m fully aware of the current discussions around strike rates and attacking cricket. I understand the direction the game is taking.

“I don’t feel the need to prove myself — everyone already knows the kind of player I am. I always play according to the situation and what the team needs. I know how important the strike rate is.”

Consistent performance

Despite being one of Pakistan’s most consistent batters across all formats, Babar has often found himself under scrutiny.

He stressed that the team always needs to take precedence over personal preferences, especially when it comes to his position in the batting order.

“No one has changed batting positions as much as I have,” he said. “Whenever a new player comes in, I’m the one who adjusts.

“Sometimes I bat at number three, other times I open. For me, Pakistan comes first. If the franchise wanted me to open, I did. When I play for Pakistan, I’ll bat wherever I’m needed.”

He also dismissed suggestions that he insists on opening the innings, highlighting his adaptability throughout his career.

“I’ve never had any personal ambition to be an opener. I’ve even opened in Test cricket. I started at number six and gradually moved around the order.

“I’ve never said I won’t bat at a certain position just because it might affect my performance. I’m always ready to play wherever the team requires.”
