ISLAMABAD: James Cameron’s ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ overtook ‘Titanic’, a 1997 classic by the Canadian filmmaker, at the international box office.
After the original Avatar and Avengers: Endgame, the sequel to the 2009 film now holds the 3rd slot for “movie of all time abroad”, according to Deadline. The outlet added that the expected weekend revenue for The Way of Water was $1.538 billion.
The Avatar sequel, which stars Kate Winslet and Zoe Saldana, ‘reached $2,174.4M’ globally through the eighth weekend.
However, the film has yet to surpass Titanic’s worldwide box office total. As per Variety, it only needs to make $20 million more to cross that milestone. It remains the number one non-local title in various offshore markets, including France, Spain, Germany, Korea, Australia, and Japan.
It was reported last week that ‘The Way of Water‘ had overtaken ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ to become the 11th highest-grossing film domestically.
Avatar sequel also secures four Oscar nominations
The fantasy adventure set in the land of Pandora has recently been nominated for four Oscar categories, including one for the best movie.
In addition, the anticipated release dates of December 20, 2024, and December 18, 2026, for Avatar 3 and 4, respectively, are still on track.
