LOS ANGELES: James Cameron’s science-fiction fantasy Avatar: Fire and Ash has crossed the $1 billion mark in global ticket sales, becoming the director’s fourth film to achieve the milestone.
Walt Disney Studios reported on Sunday that the latest installment in the Avatar franchise has earned $1.03 billion worldwide, drawing audiences back to the visually stunning world of Pandora.
“These movies consistently draw audiences to the movie theatre,” said Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends at Comscore. He noted that the films’ immersive 3D visuals are “tailor-made” for the big-screen experience, contributing to their continued box office success.
According to Reuters, the original Avatar, which premiered in 2009, grossed $2.9 billion globally, becoming the highest-grossing movie in absolute dollars. While it is behind the 1939 classic Gone With the Wind when adjusted for inflation and ticket price averages, it set a modern benchmark for cinematic spectacle.
The franchise’s second film, Avatar: The Way of Water, released in 2022, also achieved monumental success, grossing more than $2.3 billion worldwide and earning an Oscar for Best Achievement in Visual Effects.
Disney reported that Fire and Ash, released during the holiday season, has earned $306 million in the US and Canada, with an additional $777.1 million from international markets.
Cameron’s first billion-dollar blockbuster was Titanic (1997), which has accumulated nearly $2.3 billion in global ticket sales. The director’s continued dominance at the box office underscores the enduring appeal of his visually spectacular storytelling.
