Avalanches Kill 3 in Austria: Officials

VIENNA: Officials in Austria have said that three people have been killed by a series of avalanches in the country since Friday.

A police spokesman told the media that one winter sports man was killed in an avalanche in Kaltenbach on Saturday. The officials did not provide more information about the accident. Local news agency APA reported that the victim was identified as a 17-year-old New Zealander.

Reports said that a 32-year-old Chinese was also killed in an avalanche in the resort of Soelden on Friday. The third man was found dead on Saturday in the Kleinwalsertal valley.

Warnings have been issued in ski resort regions, asking winter sports enthusiasts to demonstrate high caution. Officials said that an alert level four has not stopped many holidaymakers from venturing off the marked slopes.
