VIENNA, Austria: Austria is set to elect a new parliament on Sunday, with the far-right Freedom Party (FPO) aiming for its first general election win in a highly competitive race against the ruling Austrian People’s Party (OVP).
The campaign has been dominated by concerns over immigration and economic issues. Although the FPO has led in opinion polls for months, its lead has significantly narrowed, with Chancellor Karl Nehammer of the OVP closing the gap.
The election outcome is critical as it may determine whether the FPO leader, Herbert Kickl, can become Austria’s next chancellor. However, neither party is expected to win an outright majority, meaning coalition talks will be necessary. While Nehammer’s OVP has shown willingness to tighten immigration laws like the FPO, Nehammer has ruled out forming a coalition with Kickl as chancellor, citing his extreme views.
Kickl, known for his provocative rhetoric, advocates for building a “fortress Austria” to block migrants and opposes EU sanctions against Russia, blaming them for harming Austria’s economy. Despite his polarizing stance, the FPO has capitalized on growing public discontent over economic issues, including inflation.
Nehammer, who has led a coalition with the Greens since 2021, has positioned himself as a stable leader in times of crisis, particularly after Austria experienced severe flooding earlier this month. However, the election remains too close to call, with both candidates vying for control of Austria’s future, especially amid fears of the far-right’s rise across Europe.
