ISLAMABAD: The Austrian Ambassador to Pakistan, H.E Andrea Wicke, met with Senator Saleem Mandviwalla, Chairman of the Senate’s Standing Committee on Finance and Revenue, at the Senate Secretariat in Islamabad. The meeting, held on Monday, aimed at fortifying bilateral relations and addressing shared concerns.

The discussion covered various facets, with Senator Saleem Mandviwalla highlighting Pakistan’s economic challenges and emphasizing the urgent need for robust reforms. He underlined Pakistan’s strategic geographical advantages, including its coastline, road connectivity, and the significant potential of Gwadar Port.

Key issues addressed included the delayed Iran-Pakistan Gas Pipeline Project and the substantial energy scarcity hindering progress in Pakistan. Trade relations between Pakistan and Austria were thoroughly examined, with Senator Mandviwalla shedding light on governance issues and stressing the necessity for comprehensive reforms.

Ambassador Andrea Wicke acknowledged the challenge of population growth in Pakistan and emphasized the importance of focusing on socio-economic development and education. The discussion extended to the Generalized System of Preferences Plus (GSP+) status and trade relations with the European Union.

Senator Saleem Mandviwalla briefed Ambassador Wicke on the upcoming General Elections in Pakistan, underscoring the commitment to the democratic process.

The meeting concluded on a positive note, with both parties expressing their commitment to fostering stronger ties between Austria and Pakistan and addressing shared challenges for mutual benefit.
