JODHPUR: The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) has deployed its combat aircraft for the first time in India, participating in the ‘Tarang Shakti’ exercise, according to a statement from Australia’s Defence Department.

The second phase of India’s largest multilateral air exercise, ‘Exercise Tarang Shakti 24,’ is being held at Air Force Station Jodhpur from August 30 to September 13. The exercise features participants from Australia, Greece, Sri Lanka, the UAE, Japan, Singapore, and the United States.

Australia has sent three EA-18G Growler aircraft from No. 6 Squadron and up to 120 personnel for the exercise. This marks the inaugural participation of India in Exercise Tarang Shakti with 11 participating nations and 18 observer nations.

Chief of Air Force Air Marshal Stephen Chappell said that Australia’s involvement in Exercise Tarang Shakti reflects its commitment to supporting regional partners and enhancing international cooperation to address shared security challenges.

“India is a key security partner for Australia. The Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between our countries underscores our commitment to practical and tangible cooperation that contributes to Indo-Pacific stability,” Air Marshal Chappell stated.

He noted that Australia’s participation demonstrates its advanced capabilities and provides an opportunity for Australian aviators to develop interoperability with foreign militaries. The exercise is expected to help enhance mutual understanding of tactical operations and strengthen international relations.

In recent years, Australia and India have expanded their air defense cooperation, including hosting Indian Air Force Flankers at Exercise Pitch Black in 2018, 2022, and 2024. The two nations also conduct various training and engagement activities involving Indian Navy P-8I Neptune surveillance aircraft.

The Australian Defence Department affirmed its commitment to deepening defense cooperation with India and supporting its significant role in the Indo-Pacific region.

The first phase of Exercise Tarang Shakti, held in Tamil Nadu in August, involved the air forces of Germany, France, Spain, and the UK.
