CANBERRA: In a revelation that has stirred political tension and raised eyebrows in diplomatic circles, Australian intelligence authorities have revealed the expulsion of a group of Indian spies who were attempting to steal defense secrets and surveil expatriate communities within Australia.

The covert operation, unveiled by intelligence chiefs, dates back to 2021 when Australian authorities uncovered a “nest of spies” deployed to infiltrate sensitive sectors and gather classified information. While the expulsion took place discreetly, Australian officials had remained tight-lipped regarding the identities of the foreign operatives until recent claims by local media, notably ABC, attributing the espionage activities to Indian intelligence agencies.

Despite the sensitive nature of the allegations, Australian officials, including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and key ministers, have refrained from confirming the reports, citing the confidentiality of intelligence matters. This reticence comes at a delicate juncture for Canberra, given the burgeoning security collaboration between Australia and India, underscored by their membership in the Quad security partnership alongside the United States and Japan.

Prime Minister Albanese, who had previously emphasized the strengthening ties with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, opted not to delve into specifics regarding the espionage allegations. He maintained a stance of non-disclosure on intelligence issues. This stance aligns with Canberra’s broader strategy of prioritizing trade and defense partnerships while downplaying concerns over internal policies of allied nations.

The allegations of Indian espionage activities have not only sparked diplomatic discomfort but also prompted a reaffirmation of Australia’s commitment to safeguarding democratic principles and resilience against foreign interference. Foreign Minister Penny Wong reiterated the importance of upholding democratic values while Treasurer Jim Chalmers emphasized the enduring positive relationship between Australia and India.

The revelation sheds light on the covert maneuvers undertaken by Indian intelligence operatives to cultivate contacts within Australian political, law enforcement, and diplomatic circles. Mike Burgess, a top Australian intelligence official, previously accused the expelled spies of attempting to gather sensitive information on trade relationships and security protocols.

While the Indian High Commission has refrained from commenting on the allegations, the incident underscores the complexities and sensitivities surrounding international espionage and the challenges it poses to bilateral relations between nations.
