SYDNEY, Australia:  Australia has elevated its terror threat level from “possible” to “probable,” signaling an increased likelihood of an onshore attack within the next year. This decision, announced by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, follows advice from security services and reflects a significant uptick in extremist views among Australians. Despite the heightened threat, Albanese assured that there is no imminent risk of an attack.

The Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) pointed to escalating tensions in the Middle East, including the recent conflict between Israel and Hamas, as factors contributing to this decision. ASIO’s Director-General, Mike Burgess, noted that such conflicts have intensified grievances, led to protests, and heightened intolerance within Australia.

Recent violent incidents, including a terrorist attack on an Assyrian church bishop in Sydney, underscore the growing concern over extremist motivations in the country.
