ISLAMABAD/SYDNEY: In a new move, Australia has announced that it would impose sanctions on Iran and Russia over alleged human violations.

In a statement, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said that her country is imposing sanctions on 13 Iranian individuals and two entities that included Iran’s now disbanded morality police and Basij Resistance Force, and six other Iranians involved in the crackdown on protesters who took the streets over the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody in September.

In a write-up in Sydney Morning Herald, Wong said that the sanctions also target Seyed Sadegh Hosseini, a senior commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Hosseini was being listed for his alleged part in the indiscriminate use of violence against protesters, Reuters said.

Wong said that the Iranian regime’s blatant and extensive disregard for human rights has appalled the Australian government, and the Iranian perpetrators must be held accountable.
Seven Russians allegedly involved in the attempted assassination of former opposition leader Alexei Navalny would also face Austrian sanctions, Wong said in her statement.
Wong also said that Australia was placing further financial sanctions on three Iranians and one Iranian business for supplying drones to Russia for use against Ukraine.
