August 5, 2019, is the darkest day that cast an indelible shadow over the annals of Jammu and Kashmir’s history. On this fateful day, India abrogated Articles 370 and 35A of its constitution, which stood as a bulwark safeguarding the region’s special status. This calculated maneuver not only altered the legal landscape but also aimed to recalibrate the demographic composition of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

The motives underpinning this audacious move were far-reaching. Orchestrated under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Indian government’s action bore a disturbing disregard for international agreements and norms. By sidestepping United Nations resolutions and flouting the principles enshrined in the Geneva Conventions, India imposed its unilateral will on the Kashmiri populace, exposing a callous indifference to democratic values. This unilateral abrogation stood as a stark testament to the lengths to which India was willing to go in order to wrest control, disregarding the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

The aftermath of this decision saw a calculated campaign by the Indian government to resettle non-resident Hindus within the confines of Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. This maneuver, designed to alter the demographic mosaic, was met with vehement opposition and condemned widely. Notably, this move not only contravened multiple United Nations Security Council Resolutions—namely 38, 47, 51, 91, and 122—but also starkly contradicted the spirit of the Shimla Agreement, a cornerstone of peace between Pakistan and India.

The revocation of Article 370 stood as a brazen violation of international law and a blatant affront to the principles enshrined in the UNSCR—a fact that remains irrefutable. The oppressive tactics employed by the Indian government to stifle the voices of those inhabiting Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir—a people yearning for freedom—have faced an unwavering and resounding resistance. The resilient spirit of the Kashmiri populace has proven to be an insurmountable force against suppression.

Today, as August 5 is observed globally as a day of protest, the entirety of the region—comprising Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan, and the Kashmiri diaspora—stands united. This collective call resounds with a clear and unequivocal message: India’s actions not only threaten the Kashmiri people’s liberties but also cast a foreboding shadow over the fragile tranquility of South Asia.

The regime under Narendra Modi’s stewardship has undertaken a concerted effort to redefine the demographic narrative of Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir through draconian policies—a disturbing echo of the ideological maneuvers undertaken by Adolf Hitler. However, the Kashmiri spirit remains resolute, unshaken by these audacious attempts. Today, the martyrs of Indian oppression, those who sacrificed their lives for the cause of freedom, find their final rest draped in the Pakistani flag—echoing their undying commitment to a just struggle. Their resounding cries in favor of Pakistan reverberate through the valleys of Jammu and Ladakh, a testament to the unwavering sacrifice for the fundamental and human rights that define the Kashmiri identity.

In tandem with the Kashmiri populace’s resolve, Pakistan’s government and its people have lent unwavering support—both political and moral—to the Kashmiri cause. The President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Barrister Sultan Mahmood Chaudhry, and Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwar-ul-Haq have unequivocally condemned India’s expansionist and oppressive designs, which have subjected the Kashmiri people to a staggering 1,460 days of homebound confinement. The symbolism behind the observance of August 5 is resoundingly clear: the land of Jammu and Kashmir, its valleys, and Ladakh collectively mourn the victims of Indian oppression while standing steadfast in their unwavering quest for freedom.

As the world observes August 5, it serves as a poignant reminder of the imperative for political parties to coalesce and devise a comprehensive strategy, culminating in the liberation of illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir from the yoke of Indian subjugation. This day, characterized by fervent demonstrations, unwavering determination, and unbreakable unity, stands as a homage to the countless sacrifices made by the resilient Kashmiris—a testament to their unyielding struggle for the inalienable rights to self-determination and freedom that they so rightly deserve.
