GENEVA: At least two people were killed and seven other wounded when a humanitarian convoy, consisting of three ICRC vehicles and three buses came under attack in Sudan on Sunday.

The ICRC convoy was targeted when it was trying to evacuate over a hundred civilians from Khartoum to Wad Madani.

The ICRC terming the attack as deliberate said it was shocked and appalled by the incident.

The humanitarian body did not point the finger at any party. Sudan’s army said the convoy had come under attack after violating an agreement by approaching its defensive positions and using a vehicle belonging to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

According to the army the convoy was carrying civilians, including foreign nationals, from St Mary’s Church in Khartoum.

The ICRC said that the humanitarian operation was carried out after being coordinated with the parties to the conflict.

RSF, accuses Sudanese army of attacking ICRC convoy

The RSF, in a separate statement accused the army of attacking the convoy adding that it had resulted in deaths and injuries.

Chaos started in Sudan in April when tensions between the military, led by Gen. Abdel Fattah Burhan, and the Rapid Support Force paramilitary commanded by Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo escalated into open war.

According to an estimate by the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data project more than 10,000 people have been killed in the Sudan conflict so far.

According to UN figures the conflict has displaced more than 4.8 million people inside Sudan and has compelled a further 1.2m to flee into neighboring countries.
