ISLAMABAD: Asif Ali Zardari, co-chairperson of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), on Friday called for simultaneous elections across Pakistan.
During an interview with a private channel, he stated that none of the political parties should escape the elections and that the only concern was the timing of the polls.
Zardari added that his party had constituted a committee for negotiations and that the committee would first hold talks with allied parties. He emphasized that the doors for negotiations are never closed in politics.
In the interview, Zardari also discussed the agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and said that the United Arab Emirates had pledged to provide $1 billion.
Asif Ali Zardari says political differences harming Pakistan
He drew a line of demarcation between himself and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan, saying that the battle in Punjab was harming the entire country. Zardari criticized Khan, saying that he was not popular but that increasing poverty gave him an advantage.
Zardari’s comments came after a Thursday meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, former president Zardari, and PPP chairman and Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.
The leaders discussed the prevailing political situation in the country, and the Prime Minister consulted with the PPP’s top leadership on the recent decision of the Supreme Court of Pakistan regarding elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Zardari’s call for simultaneous elections was noteworthy, as there have been discussions about holding elections in phases due to logistical and security concerns.
However, Zardari believes that elections in one go will be more beneficial for the country. The PPP leader’s comments come amid speculation that the ruling PTI government may call for early elections.
