ISLAMABAD: Tensions have escalated between Pakistan and India regarding the Asia Cup 2025 meeting scheduled to take place in Dhaka. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has firmly rejected India’s demand to relinquish their hosting role, instead backing Pakistan and the Asian Cricket Council’s (ACC) decision.
This resolute stance marks a significant diplomatic victory for Pakistan ahead of the July 24 meeting.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had requested Bangladesh to step down as host, but the BCB stood its ground. Officials confirmed that the ACC annual meeting will proceed in Dhaka as planned, despite India’s efforts to relocate the venue, according to Daily Times.
India’s pressure
India’s pressure had earlier caused Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Oman to raise concerns about the meeting location. In response, ACC President Mohsin Naqvi offered members the option to participate via Zoom.
Nonetheless, Bangladesh’s decision to hold the meeting in person remains unchanged, signalling strong regional support for Pakistan.
The Asia Cup 2025 tournament itself is scheduled to be held in India this September. The forthcoming ACC meeting will address key matters, including the possibility of neutral venues for major events. These discussions carry added importance amid ongoing political tensions between the cricket boards.
Bangladesh’s refusal to yield to Indian demands highlights the growing politicisation of cricket in Asia. Their firm position bolsters Pakistan’s influence within the ACC and adds further intrigue to the build-up for Asia Cup 2025. Both fans and officials are eagerly anticipating the outcomes of the upcoming ACC meeting.
