Leaders of the regional organization Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have expressed their joint political commitment to build a supportive, sustainable, and strong ASEAN community, an ASEAN spokesperson, said on Thursday.

The pledge was made during the 43rd ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (43rd AIPA) in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. At the closing ceremony, Samrin, President of the General Assembly of the 43rd AIPA, said that during the five-day meeting, the leaders of the ASEAN Parliament showed a spirit of unity and solidarity.

“Unity at the center of ASEAN has been strengthened,” he added, and said that “we have come together to share ideas, propose policy and strategic solutions, and express our unifying political commitment to build an inclusive, sustainable and resilient ASEAN community.”

Samrin said the AIPA’s 43rd Conference of Leaders showed that consultation and consensus decision-making principles are still the basis for unity at the ASEAN core. “We also saw that the four principles of respect, understanding, trust and passion for peace and progress are important for regional integration and national building,” he said.

According to Xinhua News Agency, speaking about the results of the 43rd AIPA General Assembly, Samrin said that the organization achieved significant results regarding the quality of discussion, the number of approved resolutions, and personal friendship.

He said, “We are proud of these fantastic results and would not have been able to accomplish this without all delegates’ commitment and valuable contributions.”

Samrin said that AIPA, the legislature representing the wishes of more than 650 million people in ASEAN, plays an important role in understanding ASEAN’s people-to-people basis. “I very much hope that the results we achieved at the 43rd Congress of AIPA will be translated into concrete actions,” he said. “We are doing our best to serve the interests of our community.”

At the end of the meeting, Samrin handed over the presidency of AIPA to the Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, who will preside over the 44th General Assembly of AIPA in 2023.
