PARIS, France: On Friday, French security forces launched an extensive search for the culprits behind a series of arson attacks that severely disrupted France’s high-speed rail network. Prime Minister Gabriel Attal announced that these attacks, which targeted the SNCF’s installations, were “prepared and coordinated acts of sabotage” with significant consequences.
The French intelligence services and law enforcement agencies are fully mobilized to locate and prosecute those responsible.
The sabotage caused numerous cancellations of Eurostar trains between Paris and London. According to Eurostar, all trains departing from or towards Paris have been rerouted, leading to an extended travel time of approximately 90 minutes on a route typically taking two hours and 20 minutes. The disruption comes just hours before the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics.
Olympic Opening Ceremony Under Threat
The Paris Olympics are set to begin with a historic opening ceremony on the Seine River, featuring a flotilla of 85 boats carrying up to 7,500 athletes. However, the rail network disruptions have cast a shadow over the event. The ceremony, scheduled for Friday evening, will also see an expected 300,000 spectators and VIPs. Despite these challenges, the ceremony aims to deliver a spectacular display of French culture and Olympic spirit.
Security Measures and Concerns
The heightened security around the Seine River includes a substantial perimeter guarded by around 45,000 police and paramilitary officers, along with 10,000 soldiers and 22,000 private security guards. Police snipers will be stationed at high points along the route, and armed officers will be present on the boats. The security measures are particularly stringent following recent high-profile incidents, including an assassination attempt on a U.S. presidential candidate.
Challenges Ahead
The sabotage and its timing have intensified security concerns, especially given France’s high alert status. Organizers have insisted that there will be no alternative plans for the opening ceremony, emphasizing the logistical and security challenges of securing such a large-scale event outside a traditional stadium setting. The Paris Olympics are set to showcase a diverse and historic opening ceremony, with performances and landmarks highlighting French heritage.
The disruptions caused by the arson attacks represent a significant challenge for the Paris Olympics, testing both security and logistical arrangements. As the city prepares for a unique and ambitious opening ceremony, authorities remain focused on ensuring the safety and success of the Games amid these disruptions.
