Around 3.5m Children in Pakistan’s Flood-Hit Areas Not Going To School: United Nations

ISLAMABAD: The United Nations (UN) has said that around 3.5 million children affected by floods in Pakistan were still not going to school, while more than 280,000 pregnant women were not getting proper medical assistance.

United Nations releases report

The United Nations released a report on the dire situation of the flood victims in Pakistan stating that rainwater still stands in 11 districts of Sindh and two districts of Balochistan.

The report stated that Sindh’s Dadu, Qamber Shahdad Kot, Khairpur, Mirpur Khas, Jamshoro, Sanghar, Umar Kot, Badin, Shaheed Benazir Abad and Nowshehro Feroze districts and Balochistan’s Sahabpur and Jafarabad districts are still submerged in rainwater.

The report said that 8 million people had been affected by the flood water and 250,000 people in Sindh were still homeless, while 90 per cent of the flood victims were forced to live in temporary residences.

According to the report, more than 0.280 million flood-affected pregnant women were deprived of medical assistance, more than 35,000 children were deprived of going to school, and more than 5,20,000 children were suffering from a severe shortage of food.

The report said that $816 million was needed to rehabilitate flood victims, but only 30 per cent of the money announced by donors has been received so far.
