ISLAMABAD: As winter settles in Peshawar, the aromatic allure of Shawarma permeates the streets, captivating the taste buds of locals known as Peshawarties. Renowned for its delectable taste, energy boost, and time-saving appeal, Shawarma has become a winter favorite in the bustling city.

Various restaurants and bakery shops, both in the city’s exterior and inter-city areas, showcase an array of Shawarma varieties. From the historic Qisakhwani bazaar to Karinpura, Hashtnagri, Liauqat bazaar, and Namak Mandi, the mouthwatering cuisine attracts foodies in significant numbers, particularly during the night.

Even motorists are seen taking a keen interest in this special winter treat, believed to have originated in the Middle East. The rising demand for Shawarma is evident, especially as the chill increases during the night.

“Peshawar is famous worldwide for its delicious and spicy cuisines, and its Shawarma, chappli kabab, sri paye, and chicken corn soup attract food lovers from inside and outside the country due to their unique taste and energy perspective,” expressed Manzoorul Haq, a former Ambassador.

Popularity of Shawarma

Shawarma, a popular street food in the Middle East, originated in Turkey and was later introduced to the subcontinent. The culinary delight made its way to cities like Karachi, Lahore, and Peshawar after Pakistan gained independence.

Apart from its scrumptious taste, Shawarma is appreciated for its time-saving quality, making it a quick and convenient street food option, even suitable for those on the go.

While Shawarma sellers, like Bahar Ali from Pabbi Bazaar, continue to grill marinated chicken, the process takes about three to four hours before the delectable street food is ready for customers. Bahar Ali, who inherited the business from his father and has now passed it on to the third generation, notes the overwhelming response from Peshawarites, especially during the winter season.

In addition to local customers, the demand for Shawarma increases in hotels, bakery shops, and marriage halls during the winter season. Some individuals even consider it a gift to send to friends overseas, along with other local delicacies like Chappli Kabab.
