BAGHDAD: US forces stationed at Ain Al-Asad air base in Iraq were targeted in an armed drone attack that caused no casualties or damage, a US official said. This was the second attack on US troops in the region in less than 24 hours, Reuters reported.
The attacks follow a near-three month break in the targeting of US forces in Syria and Iraq after months of near-daily rocket and drone strikes by armed factions over US backing of Israel’s military campaign in the besieged Gaza Strip.
Earlier on Sunday, rockets were fired from northern Iraq toward a military base in Syria housing a US-led coalition, Iraqi security forces reported.
In response, the coalition stated that one of its fighter jets in Iraq “destroyed a launcher in self-defense” following reports of a failed rocket attack near a base in northeast Syria.
This attack marks the first major assault against coalition forces in several weeks and follows escalating tensions in the region. Rockets were reportedly launched from Iraqi territory towards the Kharab al-Jir base in Syria, where US forces are stationed.
