CAIRO: Secretary General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit has welcomed the official recognition of the State of Palestine by Armenia, terming it a brave decision that shows Armenia’s commitment to being on the right side of history, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported on Saturday.

Aboul Gheit, in a statement, stressed that the growing number of countries recognizing the State of Palestine reflects the global community’s widespread belief that the occupation must end and the two-state solution must be executed.

He also said that this recognition marks a major step toward establishing a Palestinian state based on the June 4, 1967 lines.  Aboul Gheit called upon all countries that have not yet recognized the State of Palestine to do so as early as possible, emphasizing that such a decision would be legally, morally and politically correct.

He added that recognizing the State of Palestine is a crucial step in achieving peace and ending the occupation, as well as an expression of support for the two-state solution.

Armenia yesterday announced its official recognition of the State of Palestine amid ongoing violence against the civilian population by Israeli authorities in Gaza.

The Foreign Ministry in a statement said that the country took the decision to reaffirm its commitment to international law and the principles of sovereignty, equality and peaceful coexistence of peoples.

Earlier, a series of countries had recognized the State of Palestine during the war between Israel and Hamas.
