CAIRO: Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, has warned against the grave consequences of Israel’s expanded ground offensive in Gaza, calling it a dangerous escalation of an ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people over the past two years.

The Saudi Press Agency (SPA) on Thursday reported that Aboul Gheit, in a statement, condemned Israel’s blatant efforts to forcefully expel Palestinians from Gaza under the threat of death or starvation

He characterised these actions as part of a systematic displacement strategy that is rejected by Arab nations and the broader international community, stressing that such conduct constitutes a clear violation of international law.

The Secretary-General underscored that Israel’s military operations in Gaza reflect an unprecedented level of recklessness and a complete disregard for human life.

Aboul Gheit also criticised the international community for its continued failure to intervene and halt Israel’s aggression, warning that global inaction would have long-term consequences. He accused the Israeli leadership of harboring a dangerous intent to spill Palestinian blood and forcibly displace the population, rendering Gaza uninhabitable in the process.

The secretary-general expressed support for the findings of the United Nations Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, which confirmed Israel has committed acts of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.

Aboul Gheit stressed that these findings must compel the international community to act—holding Israel’s leaders accountable for war crimes and working urgently to halt the ongoing genocide in Gaza, which continues to unfold before the world’s eyes.

Gaza death toll passes 65,100

At least 65,141 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s genocidal war on Palestinian since October 2023, Gaza’s health ministry said.

In a statement, it said that 79 bodies were brought to hospitals in the last 24 hours, while 228 people were injured.

“Many victims are still trapped under the rubble and on the roads as rescuers are unable to reach them,” it added.

The ministry also noted that nine Palestinians were killed and over 33 others injured by Israeli army fire while trying to get humanitarian aid in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of Palestinians killed while seeking aid to 2,513, with over 18,414 others wounded since May 27.
