CAIRO: The Arab League and the Arab Red Crescent and Red Cross Organization (ARCO) have jointly appealed to the international community to urgently provide essential humanitarian aid to those affected by the earthquake in Morocco and the floods in Libya, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported on Thursday.
During a joint press conference today, Arab League Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Social Sector, Haifa Abu Ghazaleh, and ARCO Secretary-General Dr. Saleh Al-Tuwaijri addressed the humanitarian crisis in both countries.
This initiative is part of the ongoing collaboration between the two organizations under a memorandum of understanding signed in 2020.
Abu Ghazaleh underscored the Arab League Secretariat’s commitment to monitoring the humanitarian situation in member states. She emphasized that the Arab region is grappling with numerous humanitarian challenges stemming from natural disasters, climate change, and armed conflicts, resulting in the deterioration of crucial sectors in many regional nations.
She also highlighted the Arab League’s efforts, utilizing various mechanisms, including specialized ministerial councils and affiliated organizations, to provide assistance to all Arab states facing challenging humanitarian conditions and to countries hosting refugees.
Al-Tuwaijri disclosed that an urgent appeal has been launched to secure $9 million for the Libyan Red Crescent to address the immediate needs required to confront the devastating aftermath of the flood.
He praised the unprecedented solidarity shown by Arab countries towards Morocco and Libya, demonstrating their readiness to offer urgent assistance.
Al-Tuwaijri also commended the significant roles played by the Red Crescent societies in Morocco and Libya in aiding the affected and survivors of the earthquake and floods, respectively.
