NEW YORK: A ministerial committee formed by the Joint Arab-Islamic Extraordinary Summit convened on Wednesday at the UN headquarters in New York to discuss the ongoing crisis in Gaza, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported. The meeting, chaired by Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, included representatives from China, Qatar, Jordan, Egypt, Palestine, Turkey, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the UAE.
The agenda of the meeting focused on recent events in Gaza, particularly the outcomes of the humanitarian truce for Palestinian prisoners and efforts to achieve a lasting ceasefire. The committee emphasized the vital role of the UN Security Council’s permanent members in safeguarding civilians and enforcing international humanitarian laws. Additionally, there was a strong emphasis on establishing secure channels to facilitate the entry of urgent humanitarian aid into Gaza.
Arab-Islamic Ministerial Committee Calls for Sustainable Peace Process
Foreign Ministers at the meeting reiterated their call for a sustainable peace process, urging the implementation of resolutions that support a two-state solution. They advocated for the creation of an independent, sovereign Palestinian state based on the borders of 1967, with East Jerusalem designated as its capital.
The committee, in its discussions, urged the global community to consistently apply international legal and moral principles. They emphasized the importance of protecting Palestinians in Gaza and the occupied West Bank from actions by the Israeli army and violent illegal settlers.
