CAIRO: The Arab League foreign ministers have called upon the international community to enforce the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice on July 19, declaring Israel’s settlements illegal on Palestinian territories, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported on Wednesday.
At the conclusion of the 162nd Ministerial Meeting of the Arab League Council, chaired by Yemen, the ministers stressed that all states and global organizations are obligated not to recognize the legitimacy of the situation developing from Israel’s continued and illegal occupation of the Palestinian territory.
They have called on the United Nations, especially the General Assembly and the Security Council, to consider extra measures necessary to put an end to Israel’s illegal occupation as early as possible.
The Arab foreign ministers have also urged the International Court of Justice to expedite its judgment on the case of South Africa against Israel, accusing it of failing to fulfill its obligations under the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.
Furthermore, the ministers stressed that Israel’s expulsion of the Palestinian people from their land is a serious violation of international humanitarian law, and amounts to a declaration of war and aggression against Arab national security.
The Arab foreign ministers also asked the Arab group in New York to take steps to suspend the participation of Israel in the United Nations General Assembly due to its non-compliance with the principles and purposes of the United Nations Charter.
The ministers also rejected the claims made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to justify his refusal to withdraw from the Philadelphi corridor, terming these claims to be aimed at obstructing efforts to achieve a ceasefire and exchange prisoners and hostages undertaken by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States.
They called for the complete withdrawal of Israel from the Gaza Strip, including the Philadelphi corridor and the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing.
The Arab foreign ministers announced their support for the State of Palestine’s move to obtain full membership in the United Nations. They urged the Security Council to accept this membership based on the decision of the United Nations General Assembly, which recognized the right of the State of Palestine to full membership in the United Nations.
