LAHORE: Former Pakistani fast bowler Aqib Javed is likely to be appointed as the head coach of Pakistan’s white-ball cricket team, Pakistan’s local media and ESPNcricinfo reported on Sunday.

According to media reports, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is considering Aqib Javed for the role ahead of the upcoming series against Zimbabwe and other international fixtures.

The PCB is expected to finalize Aqib Javed’s appointment very soon, various local media reported.

Aqib Javed is currently serving as a member of the PCB’s selection committee.

This development comes after Gary Kirsten’s resignation as head coach ahead of the Australia tour.

In Kirsten’s absence, red-ball head coach Jason Gillespie was temporarily assigned to oversee the limited-overs matches against Australia.

“Jason Gillespie will coach the Pakistan men’s cricket team on next month’s white-ball tour of Australia after Gary Kirsten submitted his resignation, which was accepted,” PCB stated in a press release issued on October 28, 2024.

With Pakistan’s packed schedule, including three ODIs and three T20Is against Zimbabwe from November 24 to December 5, followed by white-ball and red-ball matches against South Africa in December and January, the PCB is looking to establish long-term stability in its coaching setup.

Aqib Javed, who played 22 Tests and 163 ODIs for Pakistan between 1988 and 1998, was known for his ability to swing the ball both ways. A key member of Pakistan’s victorious 1992 World Cup team, he retired in the late 1990s and transitioned into coaching.

He guided the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to achieve ODI and T20I status and secured qualification for the 2015 ICC World Cup during his tenure.
