BEIJING: Chief of American multinational technology company ‘Apple’ has made a surprise visit to China as the company is facing reduced phone sales in its biggest market, Western media reported on Tuesday.

In a post on the Weibo social media platform Tim Cook said that last week he visited the southwestern Chinese city of Chengdu and met young players of the “Honour of Kings” game.

Honour of Kings a global phenomenon

He added that Honour of Kings started in Chengdu has become a global phenomenon on the App Store.

The online battle game, created by Chinese tech giant Tencent, is one of the world’s most-played mobile phone games.

The Apple CEO during his China tour also visited Apple’s Taikoo Li store in Chengdu.

Tim Cook while speaking to Chinese state media said the game has set a new bar and it is very popular in China and around the world.

Apple first established its presence in China in 1993, since then has grown into a major provider of smartphones, laptops and other electronics in the country.

During a visit in March to Beijing, Cook said his company enjoyed a strong relationship with China.

However, in recent years Apple has struggled in the country and last year, sales were hit by reduced production at factories as a result of China’s zero-Covid policy.

It is to be noted that US export controls on high-tech components are also hitting the company’s supply chain.

Sales of Apple new iPhone 15 are down in China as compared to previous models.
