NEW YORK: Apple has received approval from US regulators to incorporate a hearing aid feature into its upcoming AirPods Pro 2, marking a significant shift in accessible hearing technology, potentially making hearing support more affordable and widely available.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it has approved the integration of a hearing aid feature into Apple’s popular wireless earbuds after studies indicated that users found the AirPods Pro 2 to be as effective as traditional hearing aids.

FDA Acting Director Michelle Tarver emphasized the importance of addressing hearing loss, which impacts millions of Americans. She praised Apple for its role in advancing accessible hearing solutions.

“The integration of hearing aid functionality into a widely used device like the AirPods Pro 2 is a game-changer for those who experience hearing loss,” Tarver said. “It provides an innovative approach to improving access to hearing support.”

Priced at $249, the AirPods Pro 2 offer a more affordable alternative to traditional clinical-grade hearing aids, which can often cost thousands of dollars. This affordability could make hearing support accessible to a broader audience.

The new feature will allow users to conduct a five-minute hearing test using their iPhone or iPad, generating a personalized hearing profile. This profile will then be applied seamlessly across various media.

Apple has announced plans to roll out these new features in over 100 countries, pending approval from health authorities in each region. This international rollout underscores Apple’s commitment to integrating health and wellness features into its technology.

The development has been met with enthusiasm by organizations such as the Hearing Loss Association of America. The association views the integration of hearing aid capabilities into consumer electronics as a positive advancement for the millions of individuals who already use Apple products and who could benefit from enhanced hearing support.
