SRINAGAR: In a troubling development that has sent shockwaves through the global media community, the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) has voiced its profound concern over the unabated targeting of journalists and media organizations within the Indian-administered region of Jammu and Kashmir. The latest incident involved the blocking of The Kashmir Walla, an independent news outlet, and the forced closure of its office. This disheartening trend raises serious questions about the state of press freedom in the region and demands immediate attention.

The APHC, in a recent statement issued in Srinagar, lamented the complete erosion of press freedom in Jammu and Kashmir. It decried the intimidation and coercion faced by local newspapers and media outlets, which are being compelled to transform into mouthpieces for state interests. Alarmingly, even press statements from APHC are no longer published by local media outlets, further stifling the voices of dissent.

Perhaps most disturbingly, the APHC reported that the archives of local news websites have vanished into thin air. Articles and news items from these websites have been systematically erased and deleted, raising concerns about historical censorship and information control. Such heavy-handed tactics go largely unnoticed by mainstream media within India, and their coverage is remarkably subdued on the international stage. This lack of attention only compounds the urgency of addressing this crisis.

In the face of these troubling developments, the APHC has issued a passionate appeal to champions of free press, both within India and around the world, to urgently take up this critical issue. Restoring the sanctity and freedom of the press in Jammu and Kashmir is not just a matter of principle; it is an essential pillar of any functioning democracy.

The APHC has also called for a concerted effort to prevent the persecution and harassment of journalists operating in the region. It is imperative that these brave individuals are allowed to carry out their vital work without fear of reprisals. Additionally, the APHC has demanded the immediate release of any journalists who have been detained unjustly.

The situation in Indian-administered Kashmir serves as a stark reminder that a free and independent media is a cornerstone of democracy. A thriving press is vital for holding those in power accountable and providing citizens with access to accurate and unbiased information. The international community, governments, and media organizations must heed the call of the APHC and rally together to protect the rights of journalists and safeguard press freedom in Jammu and Kashmir.
