ISLAMABAD: A new airline, South Air, is set to launch operations to Pakistan’s northern regions, catering to the growing demand from tourists eager to explore the country’s scenic landscapes.

The airline will operate two daily flights to Gilgit, Chitral, and Skardu. Initially, the flights will be operated from Islamabad and Lahore.

As part of its launch plan, South Air will start operations with two turboprop aircraft, enhancing connectivity to the picturesque northern regions of Pakistan.

The new flights will provide travellers with convenient access to these popular destinations, fostering economic growth and promoting local tourism.

After Pakistan International Airlines and Airblue, South Air will become the third air carrier to start operations in the northern region.

Earlier this month, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) announced plans to launch direct flights from Lahore to Skardu and Gilgit.

It is pertinent to mention that in 2023 first international flight operated by Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) arrived at Skardu from Dubai with 80 passengers on board.

Skardu airport is the only one in the northern areas of Pakistan that has a runway for large aircraft, as Chitral and Gilgit have small airstrips.

Skardu is the main hub for tourism, trekking, and expeditions in Gilgit-Baltistan. It is located at an altitude of 8,202 feet at the confluence of the Indus and Shigar Rivers. The Indus River flows through the valley and separates the Karakoram Range from the Himalayas Range.

Gilgit city is another tourist destination in the northern regions, which is known as the gateway to the picturesque valleys of Hunza, Shandur, and Naltar. The famous Karakoram Highway (KKH), which links Pakistan with China, also passes through Gilgit.
