Ankara May Endorse Finland’s NATO Bid: Erdogan

ANKARA: Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan signaled on Sunday that his country may agree to Finland joining Nato ahead of Sweden, amid rising tensions with Stockholm.

In a televised speech, Erdogan said that they may deliver Finland a different message on its NATO request while Sweden would be traumatized when they see Ankara message. He added that Finland should not make the mistake like Sweden.

Ankara may consider Finland’s request for NATO

Finland and Sweden applied in 2022 to join NATO after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and require all member nations’ approval to join the alliance. Hungary and Turkiye are yet to endorse the Nordic states’ membership.

Ankara suspended NATO dialogue with Finland and Sweden last week after a far-right politician burned a copy of the Qur’an in Stockholm.

Swedish Prime Minister said they wanted to restore Nato dialogue with Ankara, but Turkish Foreign Minister said it was meaningless to restart talks.
