LONDON: Recently, Amnesty International lambasted a number of Conservative lawmakers who had asked Britain’s Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to send asylum seekers from Albania back to their home country, among whom there were those who claimed to be human trafficking.

The number of Albanians coming to the UK in the past 12 months has greatly increased. Many arrive with the help of small boats for crossing the English Channel and who are believed to be victims of modern slavery.

More than 50 politicians had sought measures to speed up the process of deporting Albanians as it was necessary to make the migrants realize that were making a journey from a ‘safe country’. According to the group, this step would significantly reduce backlogs in Britain’s asylum process.

The MPs letter to Sunak said that if those seeking asylum had actually been brought to the UK without their consent then they should not have any real reason in objecting to being returned to their home country.

It added that Britain’s modern slavery laws prevent such a move thus clauses need to be removed.

One of the signatories, lawmaker David Davis told Sky News that the Home Office was interpreting the asylum laws incorrectly. The main reason for this move is changing an Albanian landing’s turnaround time from years to days or weeks.

Steve Valdez-Symonds of Amnesty International official had told The Guardian that all this seems to be nonsense. He added that the British government needs to acknowledge whether it is not willing or able to provide them protection from persecution.
