LONDON: Amnesty International has urged Tehran that it must halt executions of people sentenced to death for holding protests against the government, Arab media reported on Friday.

The Human Rights Body condemned the executions of Mohammad Mehdi Karami and Seyed Mohammad Hosseini on January, 7 and termed their sentencing as “arbitrary.”

Amnesty said that several others people are also facing the same fate following being sentenced for their roles in countrywide protests, which began in September 2022.

International Law

Amnesty International deputy director for the Middle East and North Africa Diana Eltahawy said that it is horrible that the Iranian officials persevere in their state-sanctioned killing spree as they desperately seek to end the protest demonstrations and grip power by imparting fear among the people.

Diana Eltahawy added that it is crucial that the world not only stands with the people in Iran but takes immediate action to make the Iranian authorities accountable.

Eltahawy further added that States should exercise universal jurisdiction to criminally probe all officials reasonably suspected of involvement in crimes as per international law and grave violations of human rights.
