NEW YORK: Dozens of American rabbis disrupted a meeting of the UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, demanding President Joe Biden to stop hindering peace in Gaza.

They said that Washington must stop preventing the UN Security Council from acting against permanent ceasefire in Gaza.

Rabbis 4 Ceasefire organized the protest, co-organized by Jews for Racial and Economic Justice, Jewish Voice for Peace, and IfNotNow.

They were carrying banners in support of Gaza ceasefire and called on the US president to stop vetoing peace. Later the police escorted the protestors from the premises of the United Nations.

Rabbi Alissa Wise, addressing a press conference said the US government has single-handedly blocked efforts to stop Israel from bombing Gaza. She added there is no military solution to this violence.

Rabbi Abby Stein, a member of Jews For Racial and Economic Justice, said the UN was created after the Second World War with the aim of ensuring peace and security in the world.

On December 22, the council passed a resolution, drafted by the UAE, calling for increased aid to the Gaza Strip. The US abstained from the voting among the 15-member council and did not use its power of veto.

Russia had proposed an amendment to the resolution calling cessation of hostilities, however, the US vetoed this proposed change.

According to Gaza health ministry at least 23,210 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed in relentless Israeli bombardments since October 7.

The ministry in a statement said it had recorded 126 deaths in the past 24 hours. The ministry also reported that 59,167 people have been wounded in the Gaza Strip during more than three months of bombing.

The Israeli raids have almost destroyed entire neighborhoods in northern Gaza.
