ISLAMABAD: Senior Foreign Service officer Ambassador Tahir Andrabi has been appointed as the new spokesman of Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

A formal notification was issued following approval from Foreign Secretary Amna Baloch, officials confirmed on Wednesday.

Ambassador Andrabi will assume his responsibilities once the incumbent spokesman, Ambassador Shafqat Ali Khan, departs for Abu Dhabi later this month to take charge as Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Currently serving as Additional Foreign Secretary for Arms Control, Disarmament and International Security (ACDIS), Ambassador Andrabi also heads the Pakistan National Authority under the Chemical Weapons Convention.

A career diplomat with extensive experience in multilateral diplomacy, Andrabi previously served as Pakistan’s Ambassador to Tunisia, concurrently accredited to Malta from 2021 to 2023. From 2017 to 2021, he was Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva.

He has also held multiple key postings in Beijing, New York, and Islamabad, including as Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of Pakistan to the UN (2009–13) and Counsellor at the Embassy of Pakistan in Beijing (2013–15).

Earlier, he served as Director in the Foreign Minister’s Office, Director India Desk, and Director in the Foreign Secretary’s Office.

Ambassador Andrabi is widely regarded for his diplomatic acumen, having represented Pakistan in global disarmament, arms control, and international security forums for over two decades.
