Ambassador of Portugal Manuel Frederico Pinheiro da Silva’s Highlights CPLP’s Role

ISLAMABAD: Ambassador Manuel Frederico Pinheiro da Silva highlighted the importance of cultural and linguistic cooperation between Portugal and Brazil, emphasizing their celebrations of the International Day of Portuguese Language, which was formally observed on May 5th, as per UNESCO’s decision.

This event underscores the collaborative efforts of Portuguese-speaking countries within the CPLP (Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries).

The Ambassador recounted the various activities held in Lahore and Islamabad, Pakistan, to mark this occasion. He expressed gratitude towards the Alhamra Arts Council and the Aga Khan Cultural Service for their partnership and support. Events in Lahore focused on heritage discussions related to UNESCO-classified sites in both Portugal and Brazil, fostering a deeper understanding of shared cultural and historical ties.

In Islamabad, the celebrations continued with significant sessions at NUST and Quaid-e-Azam University. The Ambassador thanked the universities’ representatives for their participation and highlighted the enthusiastic engagement of students and professors. He also humorously suggested that Pakistan might one day become a member of CPLP.

The speech acknowledged the presence and contributions of Brazilian cultural figures, including those from Ouro Preto, a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its 16th-century architecture. The Ambassador praised the efforts of these individuals in promoting Portuguese language and culture.

Additionally, he provided an overview of CPLP, founded in 1996 in Lisbon, now comprising nine member states. The organization aims to promote political consultation, cooperation for development, language and culture, and civil society. CPLP also includes 33 observer countries, with 16 represented in Islamabad, highlighting its global reach and significance.
