LONDON: British and senior European allies are formulating a strategy for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, anticipating at least two more years of warfare. This planning takes into account a potentially diminished role of the United States, especially if former President Donald Trump returns to the White House, the Evening Standard reported while citing senior defense sources.

Over the past year, Britain has provided extensive support by training 25,000 Ukrainian troops, with plans in place to train an additional 25,000 in the upcoming year. Initially, there were suggestions that British forces would train Ukrainian troops directly in Ukraine following a visit to Kyiv by the new defense secretary, Grant Shapps. However, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has ruled out this approach.

Additionally, the UK is contemplating the establishment of a major medical rehabilitation center in western Ukraine. A note has been sent to Russia, warning against any attacks on this center, which is protected under the Red Cross international convention.

The conflict in Ukraine has seen an increase in violence during the summer offensive, launched by Ukrainian forces in May. However, it is anticipated that this offensive will wind down in the coming weeks as weather conditions deteriorate.

The proactive measures taken by Britain and its European allies underscore their commitment to supporting Ukraine in its struggle.
