NEW YORK: Algeria has requested to call an open emergency session of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) over the Israeli bombardment that targeted Al-Tabin school in Gaza, killing more than 100 Palestinians, including women and children.
The Algerian news agency quoted a diplomatic source in New York as saying that Algeria has requested the convening of a session to discuss recent developments in the occupied Palestinian territories, especially the Israeli aerial attack on a school in Gaza.
The source said that the request to convene the session was submitted in consultation with the State of Palestine and has the support of other Member States of the UNSC.
The Palestinian Foreign Ministry condemned the international community, including the UN Security Council, for not taking action to prevent what it describes as a genocide against Palestinians.
This latest incident brings the total number of schools targeted by Israeli forces in Gaza City over the past week to six. Despite mediation efforts from Egypt, the US, and Qatar, which included calls for a ceasefire and hostage exchange, Israel has continued its offensive.
The ongoing conflict, which has been exacerbated by a cross-border attack by the Palestinian resistance group Hamas, has led to nearly 39,800 casualties since October. Israel faces accusations of genocide at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which has ordered a halt to its military operations in Rafah, a city heavily impacted by the conflict.
