ALGIERS: Algeria and the European Union (EU) have stressed upon the need to combine political and diplomatic pressures to restore democracy in Niger.
The two sides expressed these views during a telephonic conversation between Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf and EU foreign policy chief, according to a statement of the Algerian Foreign Ministry.
They discussed recent developments in Niger and exchanged views on the threats posed to Niger and Africa by the recent developments in the country.
Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in his remarks called for a diplomatic solution to the Niger crisis. He said that Algeria is willing to play any role to restore constitutional legitimacy in Ninger if assigned.
On July 26, the coup in Niger saw President Mohamed Bazoum getting ousted by the head of Niger’s Presidential Guard General Abdourahamane Tiani who declared himself as new president.
Algeria Calls for Unifying Political, Diplomatic Pressures to End Niger Crisis
The ousted president has been confined to his official residence in Niamey since July 26.
Bazoum became president in 2021 in Niger’s first democratic power transition since it got independence from France in 1960.
Niger has played a key role in Western strategies to fight and combat jihadist insurgencies with the support of France and the United States.

Niger’s military government is also facing a Sunday deadline set by the regional bloc known as ECOWAS to release and reinstate the democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum otherwise they will have to face a military intervention.
Mali and Burkina Faso, also ruled by military leaders have warned against any military intervention in Niger, adding that it would be an open declaration of war against them.
