Alert Issued After Chile’s Lascar Erupts

ISLAMABAD/SANTIAGO: The officials have issued a safety warning after Chile’s Lascar volcano sent an eruptive column 6,000m into the sky.

Lascar volcano that sits in the Andes, rumbled into action on Saturday,  also triggering minor earth tremors. There were no damages in the surrounding area according to the initial reports but an initial green warning was raised to yellow. National Geology and Mining Service (Sernageomin) of the country defines “yellow” as a volcano is unstable.

According to Sernageomin, the classification also suggests that experts are monitoring a site for appearances of smoke and minor explosions. Residents of a small town Talabre, Antofagasta, less than 12km away from the volcano, first noticed eruption in the day.

Chile’s Lascar

Despite the big cloud of smoke that Lascar emitted comprising volcanic ash and hot gases, no homes are thought to have been damaged in the incident. Authorities have set up a no-entry perimeter around 5km from the volcano’s crater. Lascar is, 70km from San Pedro de Atacama in the north of the country, a popular tourist destination for trekking and visits to the Atacama Desert, the driest place on Earth.
