CAIRO: Al Qaeda, designated by the United States (US) as a terrorist organization, has released a video recording of 35 minutes, referred as showing its chief Ayman al Zawahiri, who is believed to have been killed in US drone strike in Afghanistan on August 2022.

The released video recording was updated, and the video transcription does not clearly point toward the time frame of the video recording creation.

Killing of Al Qaeda Chief Zawahiri

Al-Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri was killed in a US drone strike in Afghanistan on 1 August 2022, creating a huge blow to Al Qaeda since its founder Osama bin Laden was killed in 2011 by the US.

Al-Qaeda chief Zawahiri had been in hiding for years, and the US started operations to trace and kill him. The US killed Zawahiri in Afghanistan due to “careful, patient and consistent” work by the counterterrorism institutions and intelligence agencies, said a senior US administration official.

Successor of Al Qaeda

Al Qaeda has not named its successor, but Saif al-Adel, a former Egyptian special forces officer serving as a high-ranking member of Al Qaeda, is anticipated by experts as the top contender for the commanding of Al Qaeda.
