BANGKOK: Al-Azhar University and the Muslim Council of Elders have planned to organize an international conference on coexistence in Thailand, which will bring together several religious leaders and figures from different parts of the world.
Ahmed Al-Tayeb, the grand imam of Al-Azhar and chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders said the objective of the conference is to promote peaceful coexistence and human fraternity.
King Maha Vajiralongkorn of Thailand and Queen Suthida have recently met Al-Tayeb at the Grand Palace in Bangkok.
The king of Thailand expressed his happiness with the grand imam’s visit, and lauded efforts by Al-Azhar and the Muslim Council of Elders to promote the values of peace, dialogue, tolerance and human coexistence.
He said that Thai people who live in harmony and unity highly respect Al-Azhar. The Thai ruler expressed his country’s eagerness to build cooperation and ties with Al-Azhar by increasing the number of incoming students and Al-Azhar emissaries. He added that Al-Azhar serves as a guiding light for Thai Muslims.
The king highlighted the keen interest of all Thai Muslim families to send their children to study at Al-Azhar.
He expressed the hope that the grand imam’s historic visit will lead to the launch of inspiring projects and initiatives in Thailand.
The king said Thai Muslims will gain from the meetings held by institutions of Al-Azhar during the grand imam’s visit.
The grand imam in his views said that Thai students studying at Al-Azhar have set an example of diligence and ethics and made notable social contributions in various faculties of Al-Azhar University.
He said Al-Azhar is read to establish centers for teaching the Arabic language in Thailand, serving Muslims to learn the language of the Qur’an.
