PARIS: An airport in eastern France was evacuated and shut down on Friday for safety reasons, according to an official announcement.
The Basel-Mulhouse EuroAirport, situated on the French-Swiss border, reported on its website: “For safety reasons, the terminal had to be evacuated and is currently closed.”
The airport’s management did not provide further details, stating that additional information would follow.
The evacuation comes as France has been on high alert since early Friday due to “malicious acts” targeting the railway network, particularly in the northern and eastern parts of the country.
Officials reported that rail location cabinets and cables were set on fire and severed.
The attacks have significantly disrupted railway traffic just as Paris prepares to host the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games on the River Seine.
Earlier this week, events in football, archery, and rugby began ahead of the ceremony.
