VANCOUVER, Canada: An Air India pilot was removed from duty after being found under the influence of alcohol and failing two breathalyser tests at Vancouver International Airport ahead of a scheduled flight to India, prompting Canada’s transport regulator to seek an investigation into the incident, according to a source familiar with the matter.

The tests were conducted after the pilot was asked to leave the aircraft, according to the same source. Transport Canada described the incident as a “serious matter” in a letter to the airline and is expected to pursue enforcement action, reports Reuters.

Air India confirmed that the December 23 flight from Vancouver to Delhi was delayed and an alternate pilot was deployed. “The pilot has been taken off flying duties during the process of enquiry. Air India maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards any violation of applicable rules and regulations,” the airline said, adding that confirmed violations would result in strict disciplinary action.

Transport Canada has asked Air India to submit its findings and measures to prevent future incidents by January 26, the source said.

The incident comes amid heightened scrutiny of India’s aviation sector following the June 12 Boeing Dreamliner crash that killed 260 people.

Air India pilots have faced multiple warnings from India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation for regulatory lapses and safety concerns, including operating aircraft despite knowledge of repeated technical snags.
